President Tinubu Appoints AIG Olatunji Disu as New Inspector-General of Police, Replacing Kayode Egbetokun

In a significant leadership change at the Nigeria Police Force, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olatunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The appointment follows the resignation of the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, which multiple credible sources—including the Presidency—confirmed was submitted at the President’s request.

A Presidency statement cited family issues requiring Egbetokun’s undivided attention as the reason for his exit, though the move has sparked discussions within security circles about broader performance and strategic priorities.

An official announcement from the Presidency is anticipated shortly, after which Disu’s appointment will be forwarded to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation, in line with constitutional requirements.

Disu, widely known as Tunji Disu, becomes the 23rd IGP in the history of the Nigeria Police Force. A career officer with more than 33 years of service, he joined the Force on May 18, 1992, and has built a reputation for operational excellence in intelligence, investigations, and tactical command.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University (LASU). He further earned master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology.

His professional development includes specialized training in Nigeria and abroad on topics such as small arms smuggling, cybercrime (including internet fraud), strategic leadership, and forensic science.

Disu’s career trajectory features high-profile roles that underscore his hands-on approach to policing:

• Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos

• Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT)

• Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, where he received commendations for effective crime control

• Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja

• Most recently, AIG overseeing key functions at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos

Analysts view the selection of Disu—a Lagos native like President Tinubu—as a strategic choice to bring renewed focus on intelligence-led policing, crime reduction, and public confidence in law enforcement amid persistent challenges such as kidnapping, banditry, and urban crime.

The transition comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s security architecture, with expectations high for the new IGP to outline immediate priorities, including reforms to police welfare, community engagement, and operational efficiency.

Further updates, including Disu’s formal swearing-in and any policy directives, will be monitored as the Nigeria Police Force embarks on this new chapter.

This developing story will be updated as more details emerge from official channels.
