The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has entered into a strategic partnership with Swedfund, Sweden’s Development Finance Institution, to enhance the security, reliability, and resilience of Nigeria’s fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks.
The collaboration, formalized through a grant agreement, aims to develop a comprehensive risk-based cybersecurity framework that will guide how 5G and future network systems are designed, deployed, and managed in Nigeria. Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure that as the country deepens digital connectivity, it also strengthens safeguards against emerging cyber threats.
5G technology promises ultra-fast internet speeds, low latency, and the capacity to connect millions of devices simultaneously — powering innovations in energy, transportation, healthcare, education, and other key sectors. However, experts have warned that its complex infrastructure and reliance on multiple vendors introduce new layers of security risk.
By partnering with Swedfund, the NCC hopes to build capacity, adopt international best practices, and ensure that Nigeria’s expanding digital ecosystem remains secure and trustworthy.
Speaking on the development, industry analysts described the move as timely, noting that 5G security has become a global concern, with regulators worldwide implementing frameworks to protect national networks and critical infrastructure.
According to the NCC, “Security and trust remain central to Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. This initiative will help build public confidence, protect national interests, and ensure that 5G continues to serve as a catalyst for a safer, smarter, and more inclusive digital economy.”
Nigeria officially launched its 5G services in 2022, joining a growing list of African countries advancing next-generation connectivity. The new partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of secure network standards as more operators expand their 5G coverage nationwide.
