Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Names Disu Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of a letter citing pressing family considerations.

The President received Egbetokun’s resignation earlier on Tuesday and expressed appreciation for his decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country. He commended the former IGP’s professionalism and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Disu Takes Over in Acting Capacity

In response to the development and amid ongoing security challenges nationwide, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

According to the Presidency, Disu’s operational experience and leadership track record are expected to provide steady direction for the police at a critical time.

In line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. Following that process, his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

Commitment to Security Reforms

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security institutions and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and adequately equipped to fulfill its constitutional mandate.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on February 24, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
