Kaduna Cleric Rejects Arrest Claim After Obi Raises Concerns

A Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, has denied claims that he was arrested by security agencies, following concerns raised by former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Obi had earlier alleged that the cleric was arrested shortly after hosting him in Kaduna on Sunday, describing the development as a troubling sign for Nigeria’s democracy. He warned that increasing incidents of harassment and intimidation against citizens and perceived political opponents threaten the country’s commitment to freedom of speech and movement.
“This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy,” Obi said, calling on authorities to uphold the rule of law and respect democratic principles.
However, Sheikh Umar, in a statement addressing the reports, clarified that he was neither arrested nor detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), but was only invited for questioning.
“I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning. I cooperated fully and I was released. I am free. I am safe and I am well,” he said.
The cleric appealed to his supporters and residents of Kaduna State to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against any actions that could lead to unrest.
“No one should take the law into his hand. No one should create disorder in the name of loyalty,” he said, urging patience over ongoing political developments, particularly those concerning former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have not issued an official statement on the matter.
