“This Attack on Democracy Will Not Stand” — David Mark Accuses INEC, Tinubu of Undermining Opposition

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, on Thursday accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating a coordinated effort to weaken opposition parties and undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja, Mark described INEC’s recent decision on the ADC leadership dispute as “a direct assault on democracy,” warning that it could pave the way for a one-party state.

“This attack on democracy will not stand,” he declared.

INEC Accused of Partisanship

Mark criticised INEC’s April 1 decision to withdraw recognition of both factions in the ADC leadership dispute, arguing that the move created “a false equivalence” and effectively left the party without leadership.

He insisted that the current ADC leadership, inaugurated at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 29, 2025, remains lawful and was duly monitored by INEC.

According to him, INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal directive to maintain status quo ante bellum was flawed and politically motivated.

“INEC has invented a status quo that never existed,” Mark said, accusing the electoral body of acting in contempt of court and aligning with “a preconceived agenda.”

Demand for INEC Leadership Resignation

The former Senate President called for the immediate resignation or removal of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, and all national commissioners, declaring that the commission could no longer be trusted to conduct credible elections.

“The electoral umpire has taken sides. It can no longer be trusted,” he said.

Accuses APC of Undermining Opposition

Mark alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the crisis, accusing it of attempting to destabilise the ADC after it emerged as “the only viable opposition party.”

He claimed the broader objective was to eliminate political competition ahead of 2027.

“The agenda is clear — to create a situation where President Tinubu becomes the only option left for Nigerians,” he said.

He further linked Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship and insecurity to what he described as governance failures, arguing that the government was seeking to retain power “by hook or crook.”

ADC to Proceed with National Convention

Despite the controversy, Mark said the ADC would proceed with its scheduled activities, including congresses beginning April 9 and a national convention on April 14, noting that INEC’s presence is not legally required.

He warned that INEC’s actions could undermine the party’s participation in upcoming elections in Osun and Ekiti states.
