“ADC Crisis Is Self-Inflicted,” APC Declares, Defends INEC

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark, describing the party’s internal leadership dispute as self-inflicted and rooted in legal missteps.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru on Friday in Abuja, the ruling party rejected claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It said Nigeria remains a multi-party democracy with 19 registered parties. The APC also insisted that claims of a looming threat to democracy are unfounded and that democratic institutions remain strong.

The APC said the crisis within the ADC arose from what it described as an “untidy” leadership takeover that triggered litigation, rather than any external interference. It maintained that the predicament facing the Mark-led faction was a consequence of its own actions, including procedural errors in court.

APC Backs INEC, Cites Court Ruling

Defending the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC said the electoral body acted in line with a Court of Appeal ruling. It noted that the court dismissed an appeal filed by the Mark faction and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending the case at the Federal High Court.

According to the party, INEC’s decision not to recognise any faction of the ADC leadership reflects adherence to the court’s directive and does not amount to partisanship. It added that any disagreement should be resolved through the courts.

Faults Calls to Remove INEC Leadership

The APC criticised calls by the ADC faction for the removal of INEC’s chairman and commissioners. It described the demand as reckless and based on a poor understanding of constitutional processes. It stressed that appointments within INEC are governed by law.

Warning Over Defiance of Court Orders

The ruling party accused the Mark-led faction of disregarding the rule of law. It said their insistence on proceeding with congresses and a convention despite ongoing litigation amounts to defiance of court orders. It warned that such actions could undermine democratic institutions.

“The refusal to comply with court directives raises serious concerns about their commitment to due process,” the APC said.’

The APC urged the ADC to resolve its internal crisis instead of blaming external actors. It said political parties must take responsibility for their internal governance. It added that unresolved disputes often lead to legal and electoral setbacks.
