Nigeria is set to deepen collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem and unlock greater value from its growing digital and creative economy.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this following a meeting with WIPO Director-General, Daren Tang, and his delegation in Abuja.
Tijani described the establishment of a WIPO office in Abuja—one of only seven such offices globally—as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s growing role as an innovation hub and a key contributor to the future of the digital and creative economies.
According to the minister, the development also reflects the increasing importance of collaboration between Nigeria and global institutions shaping the future of innovation and intellectual property.
He noted that the meeting built on discussions initiated during the Ministerial Summit held on the sidelines of the International Telecommunication Union Council, where both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing innovation, creativity and digital transformation.
Tijani said discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria’s intellectual property ecosystem and creating opportunities for innovators, technology entrepreneurs, creators and young digital talents to derive greater economic value from their ideas and innovations.
He emphasized that intellectual property remains a critical tool for economic empowerment and can help transform creativity and innovation into sustainable businesses capable of generating jobs and driving economic growth.
The minister added that the Federal Government would continue to work closely with World Intellectual Property Organization to expand awareness and protection of intellectual property rights across the country.
According to him, bringing intellectual property opportunities closer to grassroots communities will enable more Nigerians to commercialize their ideas, build successful enterprises and contribute to national prosperity.
The engagement comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to position itself as a leading destination for innovation, technology development and digital entrepreneurship in Africa.
