Sam Onuigbo Declares for Abia Central Senate Seat, Vows to Deploy Experience for Renewed Hope

Former member of the House of Representatives, Sir Sam Ifeanyichukwu Onuigbo, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Abia Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onuigbo made the declaration on Friday at Odoziobodo Hills in Obuohia Obi Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, stating that his ambition is driven by a desire to “invest experience in Renewed Hope” and deliver effective representation for the district.

Addressing party leaders, supporters, and stakeholders, the former lawmaker said his decision followed wide consultations with family members, political associates, and leaders of the APC, adding that unity within the party would be critical to the success of the bid.

He described his political journey as one rooted in service, recalling his early life experiences in the community, where he trekked long distances to school—an experience he said shaped his commitment to community development.

Onuigbo highlighted his nearly 18 years of service at the United States Consulate General in Lagos, where he rose to the position of Supervisory Fraud Prevention Specialist, noting that the exposure provided him with valuable experience in diplomacy, policy, and governance.

He also cited his tenure as Commissioner for Lands and Survey as well as Commissioner for Finance in Abia State, alongside his role as Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, as key milestones in his public service career.

Elected into the House of Representatives in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, Onuigbo said he facilitated several infrastructure and development projects across Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency.

According to him, these include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene federal road, erosion control projects in parts of the constituency, electrification initiatives, and the facilitation of a Federal Secretariat for Abia State. He also referenced efforts that led to the restoration of previously delisted Management Sciences courses at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

The former lawmaker further pointed to his sponsorship of a major sustainability-focused legislation, which he said earned national and international recognition, as evidence of his legislative capacity.

Onuigbo, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2020, said his move was informed by a commitment to progressive politics and national development.

He stressed that his senatorial ambition aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the National Assembly requires experienced and competent lawmakers to support ongoing reforms.

“Abia State cannot afford to send persons of doubtful pedigree to the Senate. What is required are individuals who have been tried, tested, and found worthy in character and performance,” he said.

He urged voters in Abia Central to prioritise candidates with proven track records, integrity, and a sense of responsibility, noting that democratic consolidation depends on the quality of elected leaders.

If elected, Onuigbo pledged to implement an inclusive representation strategy that ensures all wards, state constituencies, and local governments in the district are adequately engaged in legislative processes.

He also expressed appreciation to APC leaders and members in Abia Central for their support in the 2023 elections, describing it as a foundation for his renewed bid.

The 2027 general elections are expected to feature heightened competition across senatorial districts, with parties intensifying consultations and early declarations ahead of primaries.
