FEC Approves Nationwide Deployment of 4,000 Telecom Towers

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the rollout of 4,000 telecom towers across Nigeria, a major step toward closing the country’s connectivity gap. The approval—announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris—follows a joint memorandum by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Ministry of Finance.

With more than 23 million Nigerians still unconnected, the project aims to expand coverage in underserved communities while supporting national security, economic inclusion, and digital access.

FEC also approved the establishment of service centres for agricultural mechanisation and the digital economy, to operate alongside the tower deployments. These centres will bring essential digital tools to communities lacking basic ICT infrastructure.

The initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to bridging Nigeria’s digital divide, improving rural connectivity, and expanding opportunities for millions of citizens to participate in the digital economy.

Globacom Completes Major 4G Network Upgrade Nationwide

Globacom has announced the successful completion of a nationwide upgrade of its 4G network, activated on December 4, 2025. Supported by newly acquired high-capacity spectrum and expanded infrastructure, the upgrade aims to deliver faster speeds, stronger coverage, and congestion-free services across the country.

According to Glo, the new spectrum significantly enhances data-handling capacity, enabling faster downloads, smoother streaming, clearer calls, and more reliable service—even during peak hours.

Thousands of LTE sites have been strengthened nationwide as part of this rollout. The company describes the upgrade as a “nationwide transformation” designed to give Nigerians a superior broadband experience.

The move positions Globacom as an increasingly competitive player in Nigeria’s fast-evolving telecom landscape, supporting digital services, remote work, e-learning, and entertainment access.

Airtel, Nokia Launch Network APIs to Power New Developer Innovation

Airtel and Nokia have completed trials for a suite of network APIs that will now be available—on subscription—to developers, enterprises, and system integrators through Nokia’s Network as Code platform.

This collaboration marks a shift from traditional vendor-operator cooperation to an open innovation model, giving developers access to Airtel’s advanced network capabilities, including AI, 5G, edge computing, and IoT.

Nokia’s Network as Code platform has grown to over 60 global partners, including CPaaS operators, data centres, telecom carriers, and independent software vendors.

The partnership is expected to power new applications across:

• Smart cities

• IoT deployments

• Private industrial networks

• Edge computing services

• Consumer and enterprise applications

Arvind Khurana, Nokia’s Head of Global Partnerships, noted that the arrangement opens “new opportunities for developers to harness advanced network technologies,” while strengthening Airtel–Nokia cooperation.

This initiative positions Airtel to drive a new wave of innovation within the region’s digital ecosystem.
