El-Rufai Resigns from APC, Joins Social Democratic Party

In a significant political move, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), announced his resignation from the party today, 10th March 2025. The former governor of Kaduna State made the decision after two years of dissatisfaction with the current leadership and direction of the APC, which he believes no longer aligns with the values that originally brought him to the party.

El-Rufai, who played an instrumental role in the merger of political parties that formed the APC in 2013, expressed deep frustration with the way the party has evolved, particularly in recent years. In his statement, he pointed out that despite his efforts to address internal concerns—both privately and publicly—those in charge of the APC have shown no intention of rectifying what he describes as an “unhealthy situation” within the party.

Throughout his political career, El-Rufai has been a key figure in APC’s successes, contributing to its victories in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections. His eight years as governor were marked by significant reforms in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as efforts to create jobs and promote equality. However, he expressed regret that these accomplishments have been overshadowed by the party’s disregard for its members and its failure to adhere to its founding principles.

In his resignation letter, El-Rufai announced that he would be joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a political platform that he believes better aligns with his progressive values. Furthermore, he indicated his intention to unite opposition forces under a single democratic platform, aimed at challenging the APC in all upcoming elections, including the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai’s resignation marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, signaling potential shifts in party dynamics ahead of the next electoral cycle. He called on Nigerians who share his vision for a better country to join the SDP in their quest to restore national pride and prosperity.

This decision is seen as a direct challenge to the APC and could have significant implications for Nigeria’s political future as the 2027 elections approach.
