The preliminary studies for the Kano-Maradi rail line commenced in 2012, feasibility studies concluded by 2015, groundbreaking today and a substantial completion is expected by 2023.
The entire route encompasses territory inhabited by close to 80 million people across 10 states of the country.
The daily passenger traffic is estimated at over 9,000 and approximately 3000 metric tons of cargo between Kano and Maradi.
The 284km Kano-Maradi rail project cuts across Kano, Katsina, Jigawa states, a 25Km extension into Niger and a 94Km branch line from Kano to Dutse, with a total of 15 stations.
The corridor runs along eight major states: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, and Oyo states
The construction company handling this project, Messrs Mota-Engil Nigeria Limited is supporting knowledge and technology transfer by investing in the establishment of a Multi-disciplinary University in Rivers State. This serve as a major component of their Corporate Social Responsibility.
Nigeria government will send 300 students to Portugal to study the technology in the building of the Kano-Maradi rail line, which is purely European.
