After nearly four years of court trials and media outrage, gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu finally gets justice as her killer is sentenced to death.
The gospel world was rocked on April 8, 2022, when it was announced that Osinachi was murdered. The singer came into the limelight in 2017 when she released her hit song Ekwueme, which featured another well-known singer, Prosper Ochimana, and has 137 million views on YouTube. The 42-year-old was said to have been suffering from throat cancer, but investigations and family members revealed that she also suffered from domestic violence at home, and her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, was identified as the culprit. The accused was arraigned in 2022 and was convicted of 23 charges.
After years of going in and out of court, Justice Njideka Nwosu, in a High Court sitting in Abuja, found Peter guilty of culpable homicide, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.
Following pleas for leniency from Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, and denial of the crime by the accused, the court nevertheless sentenced him to death by hanging on Count 1.
He also received additional prison sentences ranging from six months to three years on several other counts and was fined a total of ₦700,000.
The late singer was survived by four children and will always be remembered by many for her passionate voice and joyful spirit.
