INEC Clears 14 Groups, Rejects 157 in Political Party Registration Bid

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shortlisted 14 associations for the next stage of political party registration, while 157 applications were declined after failing to meet legal requirements.

In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education, Sam Olumekun  after its regular meeting, the Commission said it received a total of 171 applications from groups seeking registration. Each request was assessed against the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022).

According to the Commission, only 14 associations demonstrated prima facie compliance with the law and have been cleared to proceed to the next stage of the registration process. The remaining 157 applications were rejected.

The pre-qualified associations are:

African Transformation Party (ATP)

All Democratic Alliance (ADA)

Advance Nigeria Congress (ANC)

Abundance Social Party (ASP)

African Alliance Party (AAP)

Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA)

Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA)

Grassroots Initiative Party (GRIP)

Green Future Party (GFP)

Liberation People’s Party (LPP)

National Democratic Party (NDP)

National Reform Party (NRP)

Patriotic Peoples Alliance (PPA)

Peoples Freedom Party (PFP)

As part of the next stage, the associations are required to upload additional documentation on the Commission’s portal. INEC will also conduct physical verification of their claims to confirm compliance with the legal framework before making a final determination on their registration.

INEC further noted that party registration is a continuous process, and it remains open to considering future applications that fully meet the requirements under the law.
