For some days now, the social media has been agog with reports that the Federal Government has increased school fees for new students in Federal Unity Colleges to ₦100,000.
However, there is a gross misrepresentation of facts in the reported increase.
The memo for the increase was issued on May 25th, 2023, by the Federal Ministry of Education and what it means is that the action predates the current administration.
Additionally, the increase only affects new students who, traditionally, will pay for sundry charges including school uniforms.
Tuition is still free in the Unity Schools per the memo.
Boarding house students will only pay N30,000 per term, which is a fraction of the cost of feeding a child three meals a day for an average of 80-90 days. Returning students either in boarding house or day school will pay much less.
In total, there are three line items on the amount payable, covering a session. These are:
N30,000 for boarding house students
N70,000 for day students
N25,000 for new uniforms for JSS1 and SS1 students
