The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that its senior figures were targets of an assassination attempt in Edo State, escalating a bitter war of words with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed that Chief John Oyegun, former Governor of Edo State and Chairman of the party’s Policy and Manifesto Committee; Mr. Peter Obi, described as a national leader of the party; and Mr. Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s candidate in the last Edo governorship election who recently joined the ADC, were targeted in a gun attack.
The party described the incident as “an act of terrorism against the opposition,” alleging that it reflected a broader pattern of political intimidation. According to the ADC, the attack was not isolated but part of what it called an escalating climate of hostility against opposition actors.
The ADC also referenced prior comments allegedly made by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, claiming he had stated he could not guarantee Mr. Obi’s safety if he visited the state. The party further criticised what it described as allegations linking the ADC to cult-related activities and threats to demolish opposition properties.
It maintained that no elected official has the authority to threaten political opponents and stressed that its members retain constitutional rights to freedom of speech and assembly.
APC Position
In its earlier statement, the APC denied any involvement in the shooting incident and accused the ADC of acting as “accuser, investigator, prosecutor and judge” without awaiting the outcome of security investigations. The ruling party urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough probe and cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric.
The APC maintained that it remains committed to democratic norms and due process, insisting that any attempt to implicate it without evidence was politically motivated.
ADC Threatens International Action
In a further escalation, the ADC disclosed that it is compiling reports of what it described as acts of political intimidation and would make them available to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
While urging its supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, the party warned that it would take all lawful steps to protect its members and facilities nationwide.
Police Confirm Unrest, Order Investigation
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command confirmed incidents of unrest during ADC political activities in Benin City on February 24, stating that hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the party’s state secretariat, caused panic and vandalised property, leading to a stampede in which one woman sustained minor injuries.
The Command also reported that gunshots were heard at the residence of ADC State Chairman and former Governor, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, where vehicles were damaged but no casualties were recorded. The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full investigation and reinforced security, while urging calm and inviting party leaders for a meeting to promote peaceful political activities in the state.
