‘You Have My Full Support’ — Tinubu Hands Security Mandate to Disu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally handed a clear security mandate to the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, charging him to restore peace nationwide and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, while assuring him of his “full support” in confronting Nigeria’s mounting security challenges.

Speaking at the State House during the decoration of Disu as Acting IGP, the President said the appointment comes at a critical time and demands decisive leadership to rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” Tinubu said.

Disu’s appointment follows the retirement of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and is pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The Council is expected to meet next week.

Describing the assignment as daunting but necessary, the President urged the new police chief to enforce professionalism and prioritise the safety of lives and property.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu declared.

He tasked the Acting IGP with advancing the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that Nigeria’s fight against banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes requires innovation and coordinated action.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said, expressing confidence that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

Tribute to Egbetokun

Tinubu also paid glowing tribute to Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse, commending his service to the nation.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.

He urged the retired police chief to remain available to offer guidance to his successor, noting that Disu’s success would form part of Egbetokun’s legacy.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President added.
