Senate Confirms New NCC Board Leadership, Names Chief Idris Olorunnimbe as Chairman

Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator moves into a new governance phase as the Senate has confirmed Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe as Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Board. His confirmation, representing the South-West region, headline a slate of new Board appointments designed to strengthen oversight and strategic direction at the Commission.

Also confirmed were Senator Ramoni Olalekan Mustafa (South-West), Ikechukwu Ugwuegede (South-East), Princess Oforitsenere Emiko (South-South), Christopher Sandy Okorie (South-South), and Maryam Bayi (North-East), ensuring broad national representation.

With rapid technological shifts, growing data consumption, and rising infrastructure demands, the new Board is expected to support the NCC’s regulatory priorities around network quality, digital inclusion, spectrum management, and consumer protection as the industry enters a new phase of transformation.

Globacom Boosts Data Bundles, Offers More Value at Same Price

Globacom has refreshed its data bundles, offering subscribers more data volume at unchanged prices across daily, weekly, and monthly plans. The upgrade, announced Thursday, reflects the operator’s continued push to improve affordability and enhance customer value in a highly competitive data market.

The N100 daily plan now increases from 105MB to 125MB, while the N1,500 weekly package rises to 6GB from 5.9GB — part of broader adjustments designed to support streaming, gaming, social media engagement, and remote work needs.

As demand for mobile data accelerates nationwide, Glo’s revised bundles reinforce its strategy around customer-focused offerings and affordable connectivity.

MTN Accelerates Digital Future with 5G Rollout Across Major Cities

MTN Nigeria continues to deepen its 5G footprint following its commercial launch in September 2022, now extending coverage to key cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maiduguri.

Backed by over $120 million in investment in spectrum, fibre, and network upgrades, MTN’s rollout supports faster downloads, smoother streaming and gaming, enhanced video calls, and enterprise-level digital applications. Ookla data indicates that Nigeria and Ghana have tripled median download speeds over the past two years due to sustained infrastructure expansion.

MTN’s efforts underline Nigeria’s transition toward a data-driven digital economy — boosting fintech services, cloud adoption, and innovation across sectors.

Lagos to Deploy Telecom Infrastructure Regulatory System in 2026

The Lagos State Government has announced it will launch the Telecommunication Infrastructure Regulatory System (TIRS) in February 2026 — a digital platform aimed at strengthening oversight and compliance around telecom infrastructure deployment.

According to Prince Oyekanmi Elegushi, General Manager of LASIMRA, TIRS will streamline permitting processes, enhance transparency, and support secure and orderly network expansion across the state.

As Lagos reinforces its position as a technology and innovation hub, the platform is expected to improve collaboration between government and industry players, support quality broadband rollout, and drive improved service delivery for residents and businesses.
