Nigeria’s Telecom Sector Rebounds as Mobile Subscriptions Rise to 175.08 Million

Nigeria’s telecommunications industry is showing strong signs of recovery, with active mobile subscriptions climbing to 175.08 million as of October 2025—up 3.4% from 169.3 million recorded in January. Latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission shows that teledensity has reached 80.87%, its highest point since early 2024 and a 2.8-percentage-point rise year-to-date.

The rebound follows a sharp decline triggered by the rigorous enforcement of the NIN-SIM linkage policy and high inflation, which led to the deactivation of millions of lines. By late 2024, subscriptions had dropped below 160 million, and teledensity slipped into the low-70% range—the lowest in nearly a decade.

MTN Nigeria remains the market leader with 91.08 million active subscriptions, maintaining a firm grip on market share. The positive trajectory signals renewed momentum in the sector, with improving connectivity expected to further support economic growth and expand digital inclusion nationwide.

NCC Named One of Nigeria’s Top Five Federal Agencies for Transparency and Efficiency

The Nigerian Communications Commission has been ranked among the top five best-performing Federal Government agencies in the Transparency and Efficiency category for 2025. The recognition came from the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council during its Awards and Gala Night held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.

The NCC was honored alongside the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board—which placed first—as well as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Customs Service, and Nigerian Ports Authority.

Receiving the award, NCC Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to operational excellence, fair competition, and a transparent regulatory environment. He described the accolade as both a validation of ongoing efforts and an encouragement to push for even greater service improvements.

The recognition underscores the NCC’s central role in strengthening governance, building investor confidence, and driving sustainable growth within Nigeria’s fast-evolving telecom landscape.
