FG’s $552m HOPE-EDU Programme Targets 29 Million Children, 500,000 Teachers

The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), has convened a high-level sensitisation workshop on the $552.18 million HOPE-EDU programme, a flagship intervention aimed at transforming Nigeria’s basic education landscape.

The programme, supported by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, is designed to improve learning outcomes for 29 million children, strengthen teacher capacity, and expand access to quality education nationwide.

Speaking at the workshop, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, underscored the importance of coordination among federal, state, and local stakeholders in achieving the programme’s objectives.

“We have no option but to work together as key stakeholders for basic education in our respective states,” she said, stressing that collaboration would be critical to delivering measurable impact across the country.

The HOPE-EDU programme targets the empowerment of 500,000 teachers through training and support, the construction of 13,000 classrooms, and the reintegration of millions of out-of-school children into the formal education system.

Officials noted that beyond infrastructure expansion, the initiative prioritises improved teaching and learning materials, stronger data systems, and enhanced accountability mechanisms to ensure sustainable outcomes.

Dr. Garba further called for strict monitoring, transparency, and accountability in implementation, urging participants to align with the programme’s reform-driven approach to maximise impact.

The workshop marks a critical step in aligning stakeholders ahead of full-scale implementation, reinforcing the Federal Government’s broader education reform agenda aimed at tackling learning poverty, closing access gaps, and equipping Nigeria’s young population with foundational skills for the future.
