School teachers across primary and secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory began an indefinite strike on Monday, April 20, following unmet demands from authorities.
Many government schools, including Junior Secondary School, Gwagwalada; LEA Primary School, Garki; and Government Science Technical College, were under lock and key due to the strike.
The action follows an earlier communique issued by the FCT Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Friday, directing primary and secondary school teachers to begin an indefinite strike on Monday.
In the communique, the union said the decision was the outcome of an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting convened to review the seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which expired on March 29.
The NUT expressed concern over delays in implementing a report outlining the teachers’ demands.
The union also called for the removal of the “vacancies” precondition for teachers’ promotion, as well as a complete review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission to allow for the unhindered advancement of eligible teachers.
All efforts to reach the FCT education spokesperson for comment on resolving the strike have been unsuccessful.
