On Tuesday, May 12, it was announced by talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji that the actor has passed away after a prolonged struggle with cancer.
According to reports he died at a hospital in Lagos after battling complications with cancer.
The actor’s last known social media activity was reportedly in 2024, a disappearance that triggered widespread concern over his whereabouts and wellbeing.
For months, followers repeatedly questioned why the Nollywood star suddenly vanished from movies, public appearances and online interactions without explanation.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Ekubo built a strong reputation in Nollywood through his roles in several blockbuster productions, becoming one of the most recognisable faces in the African film industry.
Following news of his death, tributes poured across social media, with colleagues describing him as jovial, humble and deeply talented.
Sharing on her Instagram story, Funke Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex.”
Bolanle Ninalowo, who is now in the United States, also mourned on his page, writing, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”
Godwin Nnadiekwe, shared, “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo. To think you already prepared your Will — It’s heartbroken, I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
Many also credited him for playing a key role in shaping modern Nollywood and inspiring younger actors in the industry.
His death has come as a major shock to fans, especially those who still hoped he would eventually return to the screen after his long absence from the spotlight.
As of the time of filing this report, the family had not released details regarding burial arrangements.
