IGP Egbetokun’s Tenure is Legal and Fully Backed by Law – AGF

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has reaffirmed that the continued stay of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun in office is legal, valid, and in full compliance with the law.

Key Clarifications:

Tenure Legally Extended: IGP Egbetokun’s appointment, which began on October 31, 2023, was initially set to end upon his retirement age of 60 years on September 4, 2024.

Amendment to Police Act (2024): The revised Police Act ensures that an IGP completes a full four-year tenure, overriding the previous retirement age limit.

New End Date: As a result, Egbetokun will legally serve until October 31, 2027, ensuring continuity in police leadership and security reforms.

This clarification serves to inform and guide the public on the legality of the IGP’s extended tenure, ensuring adherence to the law and stability in the Nigeria Police Force.
