INEC Extends Voter Registration to July 24, Launches Online Registration for First-Time Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks to July 24, 2026, and announced the launch of an online self-service registration platform that will allow eligible first-time voters to register using their personal devices.
The Commission said the decision followed a review of the ongoing registration exercise and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
The nationwide CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025, and was originally scheduled to end on July 10, 2026. The extension gives eligible Nigerians an additional two weeks to register ahead of future electoral activities.
According to INEC, the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters.
Online Self-Service Registration Begins July 8
As part of efforts to improve access to voter registration, INEC also unveiled an online self-service registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
The platform will become available on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal, where users can also access a step-by-step guide to the registration process.
The new system allows eligible first-time voters to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
INEC said the platform incorporates identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to protect the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The Commission urged eligible Nigerians who have yet to register as voters to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new online registration option.
It reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive and technology-driven voter registration process while improving citizens’ experience through the use of digital innovation.
