Tinubu Appoints Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Oyedepo was transferred from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service following approval conveyed in a letter dated December 23 and signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission. The appointment, according to the letter, was made in the public interest.

He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the outgoing DPP, Mr. Abubakar Babadoko, who is due to complete his mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.

A 2007 law graduate of the University of Ilorin, Oyedepo was called to the Bar in 2008. He is expected to bring his wealth of experience to strengthen the prosecution arm of the Ministry of Justice, reduce dependence on external legal counsel for major cases, and ensure greater consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies.

Oyedepo spent over 15 years at the EFCC, where he specialised in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes. He also served as Head of the Commission’s Monitoring Unit and was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) arbitration case.

His professional excellence has earned him several accolades, including EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.

The appointment is expected to further reinforce the Federal Government’s commitment to effective prosecution and accountability.
