The University of Jos has ordered the evacuation of students following recent attacks in Jos that left at least 26 people dead.
The announcement came Wednesday, as school authorities said the decision followed a review of the worsening security situation in Plateau State. In an official circular signed by Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations) Emmanuel Madugu on behalf of the registrar, the university outlined plans for a phased evacuation of students from its hostels.
The statement noted that Gov. Caleb Mutfwang approved transportation support to ease the process, including special permission for vehicles to operate beyond curfew hours.
“Students whose parents or guardians reside within Jos and its environs will be evacuated on Wednesday from 3 p.m., while those whose parents or guardians live outside Jos and its environs will be evacuated on Thursday,” the statement read.
Despite the evacuation order, the university reassured the public that security remains in place across campus.
“Adequate security has been deployed to safeguard the hostels and the university at large,” the statement said.
The vice chancellor also assured that the university’s management is working to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of the campus community.
The decision comes days after President Bola Tinubu met with Plateau State Gov. Caleb Mutfwang at the Aso Rock Villa to address the security crisis. Following the meeting, Tinubu announced he would cancel his planned trip to Ogun State and instead visit Jos to commiserate with the government and people of Plateau State over the attacks.
