Lagos Police Debunk Bandit Invasion Rumours, Arrest 15 Over Mob Killing

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed viral social media claims alleging that armed bandits had invaded communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo and other parts of the state, describing the reports as false and capable of causing public panic.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command said there was no security crisis, invasion or coordinated attack on any school or community in the affected areas.
The police reassured residents that schools across Lagos remained safe and that security agencies had maintained adequate surveillance and security presence in communities throughout the state.
The command, however, disclosed that the circulation of the false security alert had led to the death of a 24-year-old commercial motorcycle rider, identified as Kulaha Ayuba.
According to the police, some youths in a community allegedly acted on the unverified claims circulating online and accused Ayuba of being a Fulani bandit before attacking him. His motorcycle was reportedly stolen, while his body was later found in a nearby swamp.
The police said 15 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident and were currently under investigation.
“The Command assures the public that all those found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the statement said.
The police condemned what it described as the deliberate spread of unverified information capable of inciting public disorder, ethnic profiling and mob violence.
It warned that individuals found responsible for originating or circulating false and inflammatory information that could trigger public alarm, ethnic tension or violence would be investigated and prosecuted under relevant laws.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear, while reporting suspicious activities through official security channels rather than relying on social media rumours.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that security measures remained in place across the state to sustain peace and public safety.
