Maida Rallies Tech Ecosystem as NCC Begins Telecom Policy Review

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, has underscored the importance of vision and sustained focus in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation, as the Commission commences the review of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000.

Maida spoke at the Enugu Tech Fest, where he described the atmosphere as vibrant and forward-looking, reflecting the growing strength of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. According to him, the creativity, innovation, and optimism on display at the festival demonstrate the immense potential of the country’s technology sector.

He commended the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, for hosting what he described as a strategic platform for ideation, networking, and partnerships capable of accelerating technological growth.

Telecom Growth: From 500,000 Lines to 179 Million Connections

Highlighting the transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, Maida noted that 26 years ago, the country had fewer than 500,000 fixed telephone lines. Today, Nigeria boasts over 179 million mobile connections — a leap he attributed to clear policy direction, regulatory certainty, sustained investment, and long-term vision.

He stressed that the sector’s growth was not accidental but the product of deliberate reforms and structured regulatory frameworks that encouraged private sector participation and competition.

Reviewing the National Telecommunications Policy

In line with this progress, Maida announced that the NCC has begun consultations on the review of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000 — a foundational document that has guided the telecom industry for over two decades.

He said the objective of the review is to develop a forward-looking framework that will define the shape of the industry in the coming decade, particularly in light of rapid technological advancements and emerging innovations.

“Our goal is clear,” he stated. “The next National Telecommunications Policy must embrace and drive innovation while fostering a regulatory environment that is responsive to emerging technologies.”

The policy review is expected to engage stakeholders across the public and private sectors as Nigeria positions itself to strengthen its digital economy and consolidate gains recorded in telecommunications over the past two decades.
