NCC Records 366 Network Disruptions in Anambra, Calls for Telecom Infrastructure Protection

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported 366 incidents of network service disruptions in Anambra State between January and October 2024, highlighting the urgent need to protect telecom infrastructure.
Speaking at the Anambra Innovation Week held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Awka, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by an Assistant Director, Onuogu, revealed that 130 incidents were caused by theft and vandalism, while 236 involved operators being denied access to tower sites.
Telecom Infrastructure as a Lifeline
Emphasizing the critical role of communication technology, he stated:
“Imagine an individual unable to call for an ambulance or a community cut off during a crisis simply because a critical telecom site was vandalized or access for maintenance was denied? This is a shared responsibility.”
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s recent presidential order designating telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), stressing that the move underscores the indispensable role of telecom assets in Nigeria’s digital economy.
“Telecom infrastructure is the invisible lifeline that connects millions of Nigerians, enabling them to communicate, access essential services, and even call for help in emergencies.”
Anambra Sets the Pace in ICT Growth
Dr. Maida commended the Anambra State Government for waiving right-of-way charges for telecom companies, noting that this policy will lower barriers to broadband infrastructure expansion.
“Anambra State has become a model for other states and has the potential to evolve into Nigeria’s own thriving tech hub if it continues to support and invest in forward-thinking ICT initiatives.”
He urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to advocate for ICT investments among members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, emphasizing NCC’s commitment to driving digital transformation, empowering local talents, and expanding broadband access nationwide.
“Our work is focused on expanding digital infrastructure, empowering local talents, and supporting businesses to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The NCC is implementing the Nigeria Broadband Plan to extend fast and affordable network services to all nooks and crannies of the country.”
With telecom infrastructure now officially recognized as critical national assets, Maida called for collaborative efforts between the government, telecom operators, and communities to protect these vital networks.
“Let us stand together in protecting our telecoms infrastructure, not just as a foundation for our digital economy, but as a safeguard for the lives and well-being of every Nigerian.
