Kenya Protest: APRA Stands with Kenya Amid Fiscal Crisis

The African Public Relations Association (APRA) extends its heartfelt condolences to all Kenyans in the wake of the recent crisis that has gripped the country. APRA’s Executive Council and members express solidarity with their counterparts in the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK).

The crisis unfolded following a controversial decision by the Kenyan government to raise an additional $2.7 billion in taxes. The move aimed to reduce the budget deficit and curb state borrowing, but it has sparked widespread public discontent.

Kenya’s public debt currently stands at 68% of GDP, surpassing the recommended threshold of 55% set by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. As citizens took to the streets in protest, clashes with security forces resulted in fatalities and injuries.

In a statement issued by Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Secretary-General of APRA, the association called upon the Kenyan government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens. Dr. Ibietan emphasized the importance of stakeholder consultations characterized by empathy and a commitment to reconciliation, echoing sentiments previously expressed by the Presidency.
